Greilinger-era will end in spring
An era is about to end in spring: Thomas Greilinger will step down from the big stage of Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL) with the end of the season. The forward is one of the best players in DEL-history and has saved his spot in the chronicle of ERC Ingolstadt as champion, record holder and club legend.
Greilinger (37) says: "I am not the youngest player anymore and I have thought about how I imagine my time after my career as a pro hockey player. We have had eleven outstanding years in Ingolstadt, its people and ERC have grown to our hearts. However, as a family, we see our future in Deggendorf, my home town. My sons will start school in autumn, so next summer is the right time to go home."
Sports Director Larry Mitchell understands Greilinger's reasons and has agreed to dissolve the contract (till 2020) after the season. "Greile is a legend to our hockey club."
The forward joined ERC Ingolstadt in 2008, coming back from a break from pro hockey. Greilinger lead DEL in goals in 2010 and was named "DEL-player of the year" in the same season. He contributed to Ingolstadt's first championship in 2014 (his second, having won as a rookie with Munich Barons). Greilinger has set several records for ERC Ingolstadt, the two missing "most games" and "most assists" will most probably be set until spring.
