"We're pushing each other"

Petr Taticek, forward of ERC Ingolstadt, and the Czech KHL-player Radek Smolenak come together for their summer practice. Every morning, they drive to Prague where they train by a plan of their strength coach. We had a chat with them between their morning unit and the massage.

Petr and Radek, where did you guys got to know each other?
Radek: I did not know Petr until I was 14 or 15 years. He is quite some years older than me and now an old man. (laughs) His father was my coach back than and I asked Petr for some recommendations before I went to OHL.

How long do you guys work out together during summer?
Petr: I would say it is the 6th summer together. Before that, I had a different practice partner and also worked out on my own for one year. Radek is a very nice partner to practice with. He’s always got some jokes and new stories. I am not that funny in the mornings.

Tell us about your practice schedule?
Radek: We have got a strength coach we are working with for a lot of years. I would say Petr and me are similar players. We need to work on the same things.
Petr: The coach’s getting smarter, too. We are doing different stuff, and more modern things. Going to the gym, running stairs, running in the sand… that sort of things.

How about bike rides?
Radek: Bike rides? Oh man, we hate bike rides. (both laugh)

Radek, how is Petr doing in practice? Are you happy with his effort?
Radek: It is fun to be with him. He helped me a lot when we started off. Petr is definitely a hard worker. Although he is old and struggling to keep out. (laughs) He is very focused. There is some stuff that I hate and some stuff that he does not like that much. We’re pushing each other.
Petr: Radek is getting in the age where he will play his best hockey. He’s doing a lot for it. It is good to work out with him. The summers are long. You have ups and downs and we are pushing us through.
Radek: We’re like in marriage. You help each other through kind of hard times.

Talking about marriage: You have had yours on the weekend. Congratulations!
Radek: Thank you.

The papers in Czech Republic where full of it.
Radek: Yes, you’re right. There were a lot of hockey players, so… And when the reporters’ve got nothing to write about, they come. (laughs) It did not bother us. We had a great time.

Petr was there as a guest. What about his dancing?
Radek: The good thing with dancing: It is like hockey, it’s changing. I am sure that before the wedding, Petr watched some Youtube videos to get the newest moves. He was the king of the dancefloor. (both laugh out loud)

Petr, you are already married, to Helena. As a friend, which type of recommendations did you give Radek?
Petr: I don’t want to say that. (laughs)
Radek: Petr and his wife are a wonderful couple. Petr is a great guy and a great father of two kids. My wife and I looked at Petr and his wife and said: We wanna be just like them. Petr definitely is a man I look up to.
