DEL with "Leggio Rule"
With immediate effect, the DEL has introduced changes to the IIHF rule book regarding "technical goals". In case of a break-a-way situation, a team will be rewarded an automatic goal if the opposing team’s goaltender purposely removes his mask or moves his goal. The IIHF's rule book states that the team will be awarded a penalty shot in that situation.
Referees will also be allowed to use video replay to confirm if a goalie has purposely moved his goal or taken off his mask.
The rule change was made after David Leggio, goalie of EHC Red Bull München, intentionally moved his goal during the game on December 8 2017 during a break-away for Bremerhaven. Leggio has received a fine for his actions.
